Why store emergency
food in your home?
At Essential Foods, we
believe having a supply of emergency food stored
in your home makes a lot of sense. Why? • The recent earthquakes in Christchurch, New
Zealand. • The recent floods in north Queensland and
elsewhere in Australia. • The tsunami which decimated the Pacific
Islands a year or two ago.
The governments of almost all countries now
encourage people to have 72-hour kits which can
be accessed in emergencies like natural
disasters but the reality is it takes much
longer than 72 hours for help to come in those
circumstances. This was the reason we at Essential Foods
started looking for a smart way to store
emergency food supplies.
The best
emergency food technology available
As we looked at all the options which are
available in the global marketplace, we noted
Americans tend to be very advanced in this area.
They have always had something of a "bunker
mentality" since the Cold War and that has led
to much research and development effort being
put into finding ways to store emergency food
supplies.
We found the best technology available
in America was to use freeze-dried technology where frozen
food is placed into a vacuum where all of the
mositure was extracted. Freeze dried food can
then be stored at normal room temperatures for
extended periods of time (up to 25 years)
without degradation. Furthermore, to prepare a
meal made with freeze dried food, all you need
do is add water and let the food sit for 15
minutes. This seemed to be the perfect approach
to storing food for the kinds of emergencies
which can arise in this part of the world as
well.
America's
premier manufacturer
After evaluating all of the freeze-dried food
manufacturers in the United States, we decided
to approach the market leader which was Wise
Foods, Inc. of Salt Lake City, Utah. Wise is
America's premier manufacturer of freeze-dried
food and have a product range which is ideally
suited to the tastes of consumers in New Zealand
and Australia as well. We were fortunate enough
to be able to negotiate a distribution agreement
for the Pacific Rim markets with Wise Foods
which commenced as of January 2012.
New Zealand has an outstanding reputation for
its food and in the near future, we hope to be
able to establish New Zealand manufacturing
under license to Wise Foods. In the meantime,
however, we've been fortunate enough to be able
to bring in supplies of freeze-dried food which
is manufactured in the United States. We're
confident this food will be well received in the
Pacific Rim markets.
